Men's Health Q & A

What is men’s health?

Men’s health is an area of medicine that focuses on the unique health needs of men. Though men and women deal with many of the same health problems, these problems may cause different symptoms in men.

Additionally, men have their own health risks related to their reproductive organs.

Dr. Pandya and the teams at Floral Park Medical, P.C., and Cross Island Medical understand the unique health needs of men and provide care to improve men’s health and prevent future disease.

What conditions affect men’s health?

Many conditions affect men’s health, some more serious than others. Common medical issues men face include:

  • Heart disease
  • Prostate cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Respiratory conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Low testosterone
  • Being overweight or obese
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Erectile dysfunction

Making changes to your lifestyle may lower your risk of developing some of these health conditions and improve your overall quality of life.

How often should men see their doctor?

How often you visit your doctor depends on your age, health needs, and risk of future health problems. Dr. Pandya and the team at Floral Park Medical, P.C., and Cross Island Medical recommend healthy men 30 and younger come in at least every two years for a comprehensive physical exam.

Men 30 and older should come in for a physical exam every year.

No matter your age, if you're overweight, have a chronic health condition, or are at risk of developing a chronic health condition, Dr. Pandya may recommend you come in at least once a year or more often for checkups and health screenings.

What can I expect during a men’s health visit?

You can expect a patient-focused exam when you come in for a men’s health visit at our offices. Dr. Pandya and the team spend time getting to know you so they can better understand your health concerns and needs.

During your visit, Dr. Pandya reviews your medical and family history and performs a physical exam. He may also run health screenings such as:

  • Blood pressure screening
  • Diabetes screening
  • Lipid profile to check for high cholesterol
  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test to screen for prostate cancer
  • Colon cancer screening
  • Routine labs
  • Check of testosterone levels

After completing your evaluation, Dr. Pandya talks to you about their findings and makes recommendations to improve your health and well-being.
