FAQs About DOT Physical

Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals are medical exams required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) for all commercial vehicle drivers.

The purpose of a DOT physical exam is to make sure drivers are physically and mentaly fit to safely drive their vehicles.

When you need a DOT physical, you can only see a health care provider listed on the FMCSA registry. Dr. Himanshu Pandya is licensed to conduct DOT physical and provide DOT medical card in neighbourhood of Queens in New York.

All commercial vehicle drivers and drivers with a commercial driver’s license (CDL) need a DOT physical. Commercial drivers include anyone who:

  • Drives a vehicle that carries 15 or more people
  • Gets paid to drive a vehicle that carries eight or more people
  • Drives a vehicle that carries hazardous material
  • Drives vehicles over state lines that weigh 10,000 pounds or more

Not all drivers who need a DOT physical have a commercial driver’s license. Different types of CDLs allow drivers to operate specific types of commercial vehicles.

Anyone with a CDL needs a DOT physical to continue to drive their commercial vehicle.

When you schedule your appointment, the team at Floral Park Medical, P.C., and Cross Island Medical provides a list of items you need to bring to your DOT physical exam. The items may include:

  • Prescription eyeglasses
  • Hearing aids
  • List of medications and dosages
  • Names and addresses of your health care providers

If you have diabetes, the team requests you bring in a copy of your most recent hemoglobin A1C test. For drivers with a heart condition, the team requests you bring in a note from your cardiologist outlining the details of your heart health history.

Dr. Himanshu Pandya conducts a comprehensive medical exam when you come in for a DOT physical test. After reviewing your medical history and checking your vitals, Dr. Pandya performs a complete physical exam and checks all body systems.

Your DOT physical may also include a urinalysis, which Dr. Pandya uses to screen for kidney problems or diabetes.

Once your physical exam is complete, Dr. Pandya gives you a DOT medical card, which is valid for 24 months. He may, however, validate your DOT medical card for less than 24 months if he has concerns about a medical condition that he wants to monitor, such as high blood pressure.
